Tibetan Spaniel
Origin: The Tibetan Spaniel is an ancient
breed, originally bred in monasteries to act as watchdogs, lap warmers
and to help the monks turn their prayer wheels. Due to the close
relationship between China and Tibet in ancient times, it is thought
that the Tibetan Spaniel is an ancestor of the Pekingese, given to the
Tibetan monks as early as the 15th century. Not a true "spaniel", the
breed got it's name as a result of it's spaniel-like ear placement and
popularity as pets and lap dogs to the ladies of the European and
Oriental courts, often referred to (although incorrectly) as "spaniels".
Tibetan Spaniel
Temperament: The Tibetan Spaniel is a
lively, happy and active dog. Highly intelligent and easily trained,
this breed easily captures the heart of it's owners, although may seem
shy and reserved with strangers.
Tibetan Spaniel
Activity level: This playful breed loves a
good romp, but since it has served as a lap dog for many centuries, it
does not require a great deal of either space or exercise. The Tibetan
Spaniel can adapt to both active and sedentary lifestyles; apartment or
country living.
Height/Weight:
The adult Tibetan Spaniel measures about 10 in (25 cm) in height and
weighs 9-15 lb (23-38 kg).
Coat:
Tibetan Spaniels have a medium length silky coat that is double layered
and very soft to the touch. The ears, tail, legs and rump sport longer
hair, while the rest of the body sports flat lying fur.
Color:
The Tibetan Spaniel comes in many color variations.
Grooming:
No need for expensive trips to the groomer! The Tibetan Spaniel needs
just a good weekly brushing and occasional bath to keep him looking and
feeling his adorable best.
