 About
the Irish Setter Dog:
A mixture of a variety of sporting breeds, the elegant Irish Setter
has long been a favorite among dog fanciers - whether in the field
or on the bench. Considered by many to be the most beautiful
show dog of them all, the Irish Setter is definitely the tallest of
the setters, measuring about 27 inches at the shoulder
(females are about 25 inches tall). These majestic creatures weigh
70 pounds for males and 60 pounds for females. The Irish Setter
sports a long, lean head and beautifully feathered ears, tail, legs
and underbody. It's strong, swift trot gives this dog a very regal
carriage.
Irish Setter Dog Breed History:
This magnificently colored hunting dog came into his own early in
the eighteenth century in his native Ireland. He soon gained
popularity throughout the British Isles also. The early specimens of
the breed were not the solid color we associate with the breed
today. They were for the most part, red and white. They became great
favorites as general hunting dogs and were used for various game
birds.
The solid red setter as distinguished from the
parti-colored dog came into prominence in Ireland early in the
nineteenth century. They earned their reputation as a hunter in the
United States primarily with birds strange and new to them — ruffed
grouse, quail, and the prairie chicken.
Irish Setter Character:
When it comes to personality, the Irish Setter is
everybody's best friend. Although not the best choice for a watchdog
due to it's very amicable nature, the Irish Setter makes a marvelous
family dog, brimming with enthusiasm, energy, and affection.
Irish Setter Grooming Needs
Grooming requirements are moderate; the long, straight coat should
be brushed regularly to keep it gleaming and tangle-free. Certain
areas should be trimmed occasionally to keep a clean look. Early and
consistent obedience training is recommended to help your puppy
reach it's full potential as a well-mannered member of the family.
It's Irish heritage make this dog a natural for field sports.
