A loyal family dog that thrives on fresh country air and lots
of room in which to roam, the Gordon Setter is a natural for
field trials and other canine competitions. Originally developed
by the Duke of Gordon as a working setter in the early 19th
century, the Gordon Setter is the only setter of Scottish
ancestry. Early Gordon Setters were also used to herd
sheep and point to feathered game.
The Gordon Setter is a ruggedly built dog who may have some
Collie blood in it's family tree was very well suited to
Scotland's treacherous highland terrain and cool, wet weather.
The Gordon Setter has been a favorite breed among sportsmen
since it was first introduced to North America in 1842. Over the
past few decades, this dapper black and tan setter has developed
into a serious competitor in canine competitions, field trials
and dog shows.
Gordon Setter males measure 24 to 27 inches at the shoulder
and weigh up to 80 pounds. Females are smaller, measuring 23 to
26 inches at the shoulder. The Gordon Setter's sleek, shiny
black coat with rich tan markings should be brushed regularly
with occasional trimming.
The Gordon Setter is a loving and very loveable dog that
makes a great addition to the family.
