Pet Loss Products - Remembering Your Pet after Death

By Rhyah Fletcher

When a beloved pet dies, it can be hard deciding how to handle the remains. Many owners want to bury their pet friend in a special place or have them cremated and display the ashes. Fortunately, many companies specialize in pet burials and pet cremations. These companies offer pet caskets, urns, pendants, and other memorials. Caskets and urns range from the traditional to the more expensive customized casket or urn.

Pet caskets are designed smaller than traditional caskets and can be rectangular or octagonal. Common materials used to make the caskets are wood or styrene. Caskets come in a variety of colors such as pink, blue, white, and grey. A popular choice is to line the casket with lace-edged silk, but caskets can also be lined with velvet, flannel, or satin. A satin pillow can be added along with any special mementos you want buried with your pet. If you are burying your pet in your backyard, you may want to consider a biodegradable casket. Unlike a traditional pet casket, a biodegradable casket will eventually break down and is a great choice for eco-friendly pet owners. If your backyard is your pet’s final resting place, planting a beautiful tree or flowering bush is an elegant alternative to a pet grave marker. Those of you unable to bury your pet on your property can consider purchasing a plot at a pet cemetery. The pet cemetery will give you a permanent place to visit and remember your pet.

Pet burial isn’t always a pet owner’s first choice. Cremation is another option available and offers a variety of choices to memorialize your pet. Urns are available to store and display your pet’s ashes. Traditional ceramic or brass urns are available, but there are also pet oriented urns. Pet urns can be shaped like a cat, dog, a dog bone, paw prints, angel wings, and more. If remembering your pet makes you laugh, a more whimsical urn may suit your pet’s style. Traditional urns are perfect for cats or dogs that had majestic, royal personalities. One alternative to an urn is a memorial planter. Memorial planters are designed with two compartments. One compartment holds the ashes of your pet, while the other is designed to hold a potted plant or flower. The memorial planter is a great alternative for the pet owner who holds reservations about displaying an urn.

Keeping all of their pet’s ashes stored away isn’t appealing to some pet owners. Cremation pendants are available for those who would like to keep a small part of their pet, but still sprinkle the ashes in a special place. Cremation pendants are hollow jewelry pieces in various designs that are worn on a chain. The pendant can be filled with a small amount of ashes and worn, or put away as a keepsake. Pendants can be in the shape of a cat, dog, paw, heart, food dish, cylinder, and more. No matter how you choose to remember your pet, there are many options available for cremation or burial.
