Affectionately known as the "Wiener Dog" the short-legged Dachshund has been used to hunt badger, fox and deer since the 16th century. Fearless, tenacious and keen of nose, the Dachshund's short stature made it exceptionally adept at routing it's quarry out from underground. Today's Dachshund has been classified in several sub-categories: standard and miniature, smooth-haired, long-haired and wire-haired. Although the breed is classified under the Hound group, they are more like a terrier in working ability with the appearance and voice of a hound. It is thought that the breed may have a distant cousin in the French Basset Hound. Dachshunds make excellent family pets and do well in the country or the city. Dachshunds require a daily walk to stay in good health.

Dachshund Breed History:

The Dachshund was developed in Germany and used to hunt badger and fox since the 16th century. The name means 'badger dog' in German and if ever a dog deserved to be designated as a terrier, it was the Dachshund since it was used to go to ground (dig) after the badger. But when Queen Victoria's consort Prince Albert introduced the breed to Britain, Hund was translated to mean 'hound' and the breed has been classified as a hound ever since. Tenacious and keen-nosed, Dachshunds work in packs and are strong and fearless when sent underground to rout out the ferocious badger.

Dachshund Breed Temperament:

Clever, lively and courageous, the Dachshund is persistent, outgoing and doesn't know the meaning of 'shy.'

Dachshund Breed Exercise Requirements:

The Dachshund does not need a lot of exercise, making this breed a great companion for dog lovers living in an apartment - as well as for disabled people who have mobility problems. As a former hunting breed, the Dachshund will gladly partake of an active lifestyle. A daily walk should be given to keep your Dachshund happy and healthy.

Dachshund Breed Grooming Requirements:

Grooming the Dachshund is easy as pie! A good brushing once a week will keep his coat shiny and free of dead hairs. Ears do need to be cleaned regularly, and nails clipped, but these duties can be taken care of at home.
