The Catahoula Leopard Dog
When
it comes to versatility in a hunting dog, the Louisiana Catahoula
Leopard dog has it in abundance. They are as adept at hunting wild boar
and deer as they are at treeing coons and squirrels or herding cattle.
It is thought that this unique breed originated from Spanish War Dogs
left on the Gulf Coast in the early Spanish Expeditions. The Catahoula
Indians may then have kept some of these dogs and crossed them with the
Red Wolf. They display many wolf-like tendencies, in addition to the
wolf's splotchy, leopard like markings - hence the name. These dogs are
very loyal and devoted to their owners, but tend to be wary and
unwelcoming to strangers. They require plenty of daily exercise and
early and consistent training. Weekly brushing is the only grooming this
breed requires.
